Why does our institution need to migrate from LTI 1.1 to LTI 1.3?

As part of Turnitin’s commitment to providing the best customer experience via our integrations, we are encouraging all our customers to move to LTI 1.3.

Upgrading to LTI 1.3 provides a number of benefits, including:

  • Improved security and privacy: LTI 1.3 introduces several enhancements, such as support for OAuth 2.0 and JWT tokens, to enable a more secure transfer of student data between the LMS and Feedback Studio.
  • Enhanced functionality: LTI 1.3 includes a number of new features and capabilities, such as roster syncing, easier assignment creation, and better grade pass back service.
  • Better integration with modern learning platforms: LTI 1.3 is designed to be more compatible with modern learning platforms and technologies, such as Canvas and other learning tools.

What is the timeline for the migration?

There are no end of support dates for LTI 1.1 by either Turnitin or Canvas in the foreseeable future. As such, you can change the integration when it works best for your school and course schedule.
