Creating an assignment

The administrator of your LMS/VLE must configure the Turnitin LTI integration before Turnitin assignments can be created. If you are also an administrator, visit our guide on configuring Turnitin LTI in Canvas.

If you are logged in as an administrator and masquerading as an instructor, you will not be able to enable Turnitin as an external tool. Please log in as an instructor to create an LTI assignment.

Once your administrator has configured the LTI in both Turnitin and Canvas, you may create a new Canvas Assignment using the Turnitin Tool. Follow the steps below to create an assignment in Canvas

  1. Log in as a Canvas instructor.
  2. From the side of any page within Canvas, select the Courses tab, then select the course in which you would like to create an assignment.

If the course is not displayed in the Courses list, select All Courses, and use the checkboxes to add the course to the list.

  3. From the left-hand navigation, click Assignments.

  4. Your Canvas administrator must add you as an instructor to a course before you can create an assignment.

    1. If you have not yet created an assignment for this course, select the + button.

    2. If there are already-existing assignments in this course, select + Assignment ensuring that the correct assignment group is selected from the accompanying drop-down menu.
  5. Enter your basic assignment details, including the assignment Type, the assignment Name, the date the assignment is Due, and the assignment Points (this is the maximum grade available to your students).
  6. Select More options to continue.
  7. From the more options screen, select External Tool from the Submission Type menu. Then select Find to find the external tool.
  8. If Load this tool in a new tab is selected, the Turnitin assignment inbox will not load automatically on creation and the instructor will instead be shown a button to load the assignment in a new browser window. After creation, this button will need to be selected in order for the assignment to be fully configured within Turnitin.

  9. Select the external tool configured by your Canvas administrator from the available list; your selection will populate the URL field.
  10. Select an external tool and select Select to continue.

If the external tool is not appearing in the list, please contact your Canvas administrator to ensure they have configured the external tool to the course.

  11. In the Assign to menu, select the Assign to box to invoke a drop-down. Select the course you would like to assign the assignment to. This ensures that your assignment will only be available to students in this particular course.

  12. Amend the assignment's Due and Available from dates (these dates will transfer into the Turnitin assignment).

Canvas allows for instructors to assign differing dates to different groups. As Turnitin can only receive one date, we would suggest applying the same date to all groups when using Turnitin within your Canvas assignment.

We recommend that you do not amend the Until Date. If a date is inserted in this field, students will not be able to access Turnitin once the date has passed.

  13. Select Save & publish to publish this assignment. Select Save to save the assignment.
